Idukki is a hill station situated on the top of Western Ghats surrounded by mountains. Idukki district was formed in 1972. Idukki is geographically known for its mountainous hills and dense forests. The major power generation for the state of Kerala is being done in Idukki. The Arch Dam here is the Asia's first and the world's second great arch dam. The dam is built across the Kuravan and Kurathi hills. The dam is 650 feet length and 550 feet height. Two other dams in Idukki district are Kulamavu and Cheruthony.

Idukki district is the largest district in Kerala. Idukki district has several tea and spice plantations. Peermade, Devikulam, Vandiperiyar are other hills stations situated in Idukki district. There is evidence that in ancient time onwards ivory, teak, rosewood, sandalwood, peacock etc., were exported to foreign countries.

The Munnar hill station is in Idukki district which is one of the the most popular tourist destinations in Kerala. Munnar was summer resorts of the British Government during their regime in India. Mattupetty, Rajamala, Echo Point, Eravikulam National Park, Anamudi are the popular tourist attractions in Munnar.

Thekkady is one of the most important tourist destinations in Kerala state, is in Idukki. India's largest wildlife sanctuary is situated here. India's sold tiger reserve also is in Thekkady. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is a best place to watch animals. Kumily, Kurisumala, Mangala Devi Temple, Vandiyeriyar, Vandanmedu, Pullumedu, Ramakalmedu are tourist attractions in Thekkady.

Hill View Park in Idukki offers a beautiful view of a large area of the hill station. Wild animals also can be seen from here. This park is located near the arch dam. A visit to the Hill View Park will be a memorable one. Nadukani is another ideal place for tourists to have a spectacular view of the hill station station. Thommankuthu, the seven steps waterfalls is a very attractive tourist destination in Idukki district.

The Malankara Reservoir near Thodupuzha is an artificial lake which is most suitable for boating and fishing. Marayur is a famous hill station in Idukki district. Marayur has been visited by several tourists in the recent years. Being a tropical land, there are several rare plants and animals can be seen. Today Marayur have several tea and spice plantations.
