Alappuzha or Alleppey, popularly known as the Venice of the East is an ancient city having great historical significance. Alappuzha was a trading centre of mainly spices. The city has several canals which are interconnected. The scenic beauty of Alappuzha was always attracting. Today Alappuzha is known mainly for backwater tourism. Alleppey has a pretty good area of backwaters. Several houseboats are conducting cruise through the lake. Several domestic and foreign tourists are visiting Alleppey very year.
The name 'Alappuzha' is derived from the geographical position of the place. Alappuzha means the sea and the rivers. Alappuzha district was formed in August, 1957 with seven taluks, namely Cherthala, Ambalappuzha, Kuttanad, Thiruvalla, Chengannur, Karthikappally and Mavelikkara. Presently Alleppy has six taluks namely Cherthala, Ambalappuzha, Kuttanad, Karthikappally, Chengannur and Mavelikkara
Alappuzha is the major supplier of coir in Kerala. The people in Alleppey are engaged mainly in agriculture. Kuttanad in Alappuzha district is known as the rice bowl of Kerala. Kuttanad is one of the few places in the world where farming is done below sea level. The other activities of the people are toddy tapping, fishing etc.
Boat Races are a part of the culture and tradition of Alappuzha. The Nehru Cup Boat Race is one of the annual events conducted in Alleppey which draws millions of people. The boat races are conducted during August - September every year. Alappuzha has beautiful beaches which attracts several foreigners. The Alleppey Beach and Marari Beach are visited by several tourists. Allepey beach has a peculiar feature unlike other beaches. The garden in the beach is a beautiful sight. The sea bridge, which extends into the sea is more than 140 years old, is a rare sight. Champakulam Church, Light House, Mannarasala Temple, Karumadikuttan etc are other attractions in Alleppey.
Night cruise through the Vembanad backwaters is a spectacular experience. The boat travels through the location of the Nehru Troply boat race, Champakkulam Church, the Chavara Bhavan etc. Several traditional houseboats are conducting exotic night cruises to the destinations like Alappuzha to Alappuzha, Alappuzha to Kumarakom, Alappuzha to Kottayam, Alappuzha to Thottappally, Alappuzha to Mankotta and Alappuzha to Alumkadavu. The night trip will explore the lake and the nature in its natural beauty.
