Thrissur is the cultural capital of Kerala for its rich cultural heritage and historical importance. Thrissur has significant position in the history of Kerala. The name Thrissur is derived from the word 'Thrissivaperur' which in local language means 'the town with the name of Lord Shiva'. The British called this region as Trichur and later in 1990 the name changed to Thrissur.

The most important fact about Thrissur is that it has a huge position in the cultural, commercial and religious development of the state. Thrissur Kerala have a strong and deep history that starts from early sangam era. Thrissur, the name derived from 'Tiru-Shiva-Perur' (the town with the name of Lord Shiva) is the cultural capital of Kerala. The town is built around a hillock top. Its most prominent feature is the Vadakkumnathan Kshetram or temple which has Shiva as it presiding deity.

The name Thrissur was originated from the word Thrissivaperoor (the place named after Lord Shiva). Thrissur was home for several cultural organisations.

Vadakkunnathan Temple in Thrissur is one of the ancient Shiva temples in Kerala. The temple is situated on a hillock near the Thrissur city. It is traditionally believed that the temple was built by Lord Parasurama. The temple has several mural paintings and which are declared as national monuments by the Archaeological Department of the state.

The temple festival is known as 'Thrissur Pooram' which is regarded as the festival of all festivals. It is the biggest and most colourful temple festival in Kerala. Thrissur Pooram is celebrated during April - May every year. There will be magnificent firewords on the final day of the Pooram.

Guruvayoor is the most important pilgrim centre in Thrissur district. Guruvayoor temple is the largest and the famous temple in Kerala. The temple has a history which dates back to 16th century and is dedicated to Lord Krishna known as Guruvayurappan.

Kodungallur Bhagwathi Temple is one of the important Bhagavathy temples in Thrissur district. The main festival of this temple is Bharani which is celebrated in March - April every year.
