Alappuzha Beach

Popularly known as the Venice of the East, Alappuzha has always enjoyed an important place in the history of Kerala. Today Alappuzha is important as a Backwater destination, attracting several thousands of foreign tourists each year. Alappuzha is also famous for its Boat races, Houseboat Holidays, Beaches, Marine Products and Coir Industry.

Alappuzha is also famous Snake Boat Races which is held every year during the Onam festival. The giant snake boats called Chundanvalloms, race against each other for the prestigious Nehru Trophy. Crowds gather in huge numbers to witness this race, which is also a famous event amongst the tourists.

Alappuzha Beach is one of the most famous beaches in Kerala. The sea bridge which extends into the sea here is about 140 years old. A few years ago, one could walk some distance out to Arabian Sea throuth this bridge and see the blue waters. This ancient bridge, the old lighthouse, the beach park and the backwaters are the major attractions in Alappuzha.

Tourists can participate in several beach activities on the beautiful Alappuzha beach. Water sports, surfing, swimming in the clear blue sea are offered here. Alappuzha beach have the best of aqua-sport equipment such as water-scooters and high-speed boats.

One can reach Alappuzha easily by way of road or rail. The nearest airport is Nedumbassery International Airport which is about 85 km from Alappuzha town. Alappuzha has own bus station and railway station.
