It
was the capital of the powerful Zamorins. Vasco-de-Gama, the first
European, landed in India at Kappad near Kozhikode in 1498 A.D. This
city was very rich in spices. Later the Dutch, the French and the
British dominated the area thus it became the trading centre for
Europeans. The great travellers like Marco Polo,
Ibn Batuta, Abdul Razzak all visited Kozhikode and have described this
district as 'perfect harbour'. 16kms from Kozhikode, Kappadu
beach where Vasco-da-Gama landed on 27th May 1498, with 170 men in
three vessels. A small stone monument at the beach commemorates a
memorial, which marks the landing place. Kappadu Beach is in Kozhikode
tourism.
