Ettumanoor is a major town and a pilgrim centre in Kottayam district. The ancient Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple here has brought glory and fame to the place. Myths have it that the Pandavas and the sage Vyasa had worshipped at this temple. The Ettumanoor Temple is an excellent example of the extensive usage of beautiful and expertly created murals in the temples of Kerala.

The themes of these murals are stills from the Hindu epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata and the Upanishads and Puranas. The graceful sculptures and the vivid paintings such as the painting of the dancing Shiva, only enhance the charm of the temple. The Ettumanoor temple has several murals on its walls. They are story situations from Ramayana and Mahabharata.

The temple is a good example for the architectural beauty. The Ezhara Ponnana (The seven and half elephants) is a very special feature of the temple. It is held during the temple festival which will be in the February or March months. The Travancore Maharaja had once made this offering to the deity.
