Kannur District of Kerala. It is about 55 km from Kannur. A flourishing seaport and center of trade in ancient Kerala, The name Ezhimala means Seven Hills derived from the seven hills dominating the skyline of this area. Ezhimala was one of the major battlefields of the Chola-Chera war of the 11th century.
Ezhimala can be reached easily as it is between Payyanur and Payangadi road route. Ezhimala Railway Station on the Kannur-Payyanur railway line, managed by the Southern Railways, serves this place. The Indian Naval Academy (Naval Academy Ezhimala) is the initial officer training establishment of the Indian Navy, located in Ezhimala, Kerala.
The main attraction is the Ezhimala Beach. Ezhimala Naval Academy is significant as one of the largest naval academies of India. The carved stone pillars, an ancient burial chamber and an ancient cave at the foot of the Ezhimala hillock are other points of interest in Ezhimala. An ancient mosque on the hill is another draw. Ashtamachal temple, Madayi Kavu Temple and Kunhimangalam are nearby tourist destinations which are worth visiting.
The Ezhimala Fort or Ettikkulam fort lies about 2km south of Mount De-eli or Ezhimala. The fort was built by the Portuguese and subsequently held by the French and the English. It consists of three hexagonal prismatic structures, one of which has been completely damaged. The side walls of the fort are of various lengths and are almost ruined.
This Academy will be the premier officer-training establishment of Indian Navy. The Naval Academy has a beach which is 7 Kms long, on the banks of Arabian Sea. It conducts basic training for officers in the Indian Navy. It also currently trains Indian Coast Guard personnel while the Indian Coast Guard Academy (ICGA) is currently under construction at Azhikkal. The academy area is a vast area. Among the landmarks of the area, Mount Dilli and the Lighthouse, which bears its name, are the most dominating.
