Kerala Wildlife Sanctuaries

Kerala has a forest area of 11,125 sq km, which covers almost 29 percent of the total land area of the state. There are Five National Parks and 13 Kerala Wildlife Sanctuaries in Kerala. These parks and wild life sanctuaries Kerala cover 2250 sq km, which is 24 percent of the total forest area and 6 percent of the total land area of the state. All these National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries In Kerala are famous tourist destinations and are frequently visited by tourists to experience the enjoyment of watching wildlife in their natural habitat and to get a feel of the scenic excellence of Kerala.

The Silent Valley National Park is the most important preserve of natural rainforests. 40 Kms north east of Mannarkad, spread over 90 sq. kms is Silent Valley, a virgin forest, which is believed to be the role surviving bit of evergreen forests in the Sahya Ranges or Western Ghats. It is very much interesting for everyone to know about Silent Valley.

The major attraction in Thekkady is the Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve. This is one of the major tiger reserves in India. The herd of elephants is an everyday vision of Thekkady. There are so many endangered species such as mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians etc that are protected in this tropical forest.

The Eravikulam National Park is a famous national park in Kerala located along the Western Ghats in the Idukki district. Eravikulam National Park is situated at Rajamala which sets on Munar-Udumalpet Road in the South Indian state of Kerala. The national park is situated at the higher altitudes of Western Ghats.

The Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated about 32 km from the city of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala. The Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary is also a part of the beautiful Neyyar Reservoir, which is an excellent tourist destination and the place offers excellent conditions for boating.

Popularly known as the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is a popular wildlife sanctuary located on the Kerala side of Western Ghats and offers a natural habitat to a large number of wild animals.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. one of the best bird sanctuary in Kerala, is located amidst the lake of Vembanad on an island. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is better called the birdwatcher's paradise. This bird sanctuary is one of the important attractions in Kumarakom. There are several rare species of birds in Kumarakom.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, Aaralam Wildlife Sanctuary, Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary etc. are also wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala.
