Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. one of the best bird sanctuary in Kerala, is located amidst the lake of Vembanad on an island. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is better called the birdwatcher's paradise. This bird sanctuary is one of the important attractions in Kumarakom. There are several rare species of birds in Kumarakom. Local birds like kingfisher, cuckoo, owl, waterfowl, heron and the water duck can be seen here in large numbers. Migratory birds like the Siberian stork, egret, darter, heron can be seen here on seasons.
These group of birds consisting more than thousands in numbers, come to Kumarakom from the Himalayas as well as from the remote Siberian area. Not only the birds but the scenic beauty of the place also attracts tourists to this place. In spite of the birds, there are several species of animals also.
This area is home for several kinds of reptiles including snakes like python, cobra, rattle snake etc. The island can be accessed only by boat. A cruise along the Vembanad Lake is the best way to experience the sanctuary. You can see several tropical plants with beautiful butterflies. There may be deadly crocodiles in the depth of the waters.
The suitable time for a bird watch is between the months of June and August every year. Migratory birds are coming here during the period of November to February. A cruise through Thollayiram Kayal and Poothapaandi Kayan will be quite comfortable for a local and migratory birdwatch.
