Payyanur is situated in the Kannur district of Kerala. Sprawling in the valley of the lofty Ezhimala Hills, Payyannur has a distinguished place in the history and culture of the country. The place derives its name from the Payyannur Temple renowned as Sri Subrahmanya Swami Temple. 'Payyan' is an appellation of Lord Subrahmanya and 'Ooru' means the place.
Payyannur was an ancient civilised place in Kerala. The history of Payyannur is recorded in history. The archeological remains excavated from Payyanur and nearby places prove the existence of an ancient city in this area centuries ago. The books written during the Sangam period describe about this country and this King with much importance. At certain times, Ezhimala was also under the rule of the Cheras.

Payyanur is the famous place of many social workers,astrologers,freedom fighters, community activists.The famous Kathakali master Kalamandalam Krishna Nair was born n Payyanur.So many historical story is there to tell about Payanur.
Payyannur is associated with several temples which perform the traditional dance form of Theyyam and Thira.
