Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

The major attraction in Thekkady is the Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve. This is one of the major tiger reserves in the country. The herd of elephants is an everyday vision of Thekkady. There are so many endangered species such as mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians etc that are protected in this tropical forest. Periyar is one of the 27 tiger reserves in the country. The local people and forest officials have taken every step to preserve the forest as well as the lives of its animals. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary with its diversity of trees and animals make Thekkady a unique tourist spot, distinct from other similar wildlife sanctuaries. There are several tropical species of mammals, birs, reptiles, fishes, and amphibians that are being protected by the nature here.

The Great Malabar Hornbill, the national bird of Kerala which is facing extinction, can be seen here. Thus Thekkady is actually a treasure of wildlife. Weather in Thekkady is commonly moderate throughout the year. During the monsoons, there will be heavy rainfall and the summers will be hot. September to March is the ideal time to visit Thekkady. Watching birds and animals will be convenient during this period.

The Mangala Devi Temple which is opened on the Chitra Pournami day only in a year which is also during March. It is the most convenient time for trekking, elephant safari and jeep safari.
