Poovar Beach

Poovar is one of the natural wonders where the lake, river, sea and beach meet the land, a rare find in Kerala. Poovar is a small fishing island in Kerala at the southern tip of Thiruvananthapuram district. The village has a beautiful beach on one side and the backwaters on the other.

Poovar is very close to Vizhinjam and is a network of lagoons, lakes, canals, estuaries, deltas, rivers that join the Arabian Sea. Located 38 km from Thiruvananthapuram, a 15 minutes boat ride will reach you at Poovar. The name Poovar literally means poo (flower) aar (river) or the river of flowers.

Poovar has been an ancient trading centre and port where timber, sandalwood, ivory and spices were traded. According to legends King Solomon's trading ships landed in Poovar. Another legend says that this place was where Maharaja Marthanda Varma was given protection from his enemies by the powerful merchant named Moosa Marikkar.

The area is abundant in well-preserved local flora, with hundreds of species of spices, exotic flowers, complete with banana and coconut groves.
