The Guruvayur Temple is one of the most important places of worship in Kerala. Guruvayur is also called the Bhoolokavaikunta. Located in the Guruvayur town of Thrissur district in Kerala, India it is easily accessible by road and rail.
It is at this temple that Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri composed his well known Sanskrit devotional poem ‘Narayaneeyam’. The temple is renowned for its healing powers. Several offerings are made to the deity here from the simple Archana to the expensive and elaborate Udayastamana pooja or Thulabharam where a devotee is weighed against offering of bananas, sugar, jaggery or coconuts.
The temple is built in a typical Kerala temple architecture. Vishwakarma, the divine architect built the first temple here. He built the temple in such a manner that Surya, the sun, himself pays obeisance to Vishnu on Vishu day. On the Vishnu day, the first rays of Sun fall directly at the feet of Vishnu.
