Thattekkad is made up of tropical evergreen and deciduous forests and some grassland patches. This globally acclaimed bird sanctuary owes much of its fame to Dr. Salim Ali, the internationally renowned ornithologist. After his famous bird survey of Travancore in the early 1930s, he reported that this area is extremely rich in bird diversity and that it should be made into a bird sanctuary. Thus his efforts were instrumental in the formation of this sanctuary to a large extent.
More than 300 species of birds are found here. Thattekkad Bird sanctuary experiences a tropical climate. The annual rainfall recorded here is round 3000mm. The weather remains pleasant throughout the year while monsoon hits this place in the months between May and July. It would not be recommendable to visit this park during monsoon as most of the area here becomes inaccessible.
Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary is located on the northern part of the Periyar river in the Kothamangalam Taluk of Ernakulam district. The sanctuary is 13 Km north east of Kothamangalam along the Pooyamkutti road. The nearest railway station is Aluva at a distance of 48 Km. The nearest railway station if Kochi which is 71 Km. Kothamangalam is well connected by privately operated buses to Ernakulam via Muvattupuzha or Perumbavoor. There are frequent buses to Thattekad.
Several bird species like Indian Roller, Cukoo, Common Snipe, Crow Pheasant, Jungle Nightjar, Kite, Grey Drongo, Malabar Trogon, Woodpecker, Large Pied Wagtail, Baya Sparrow, Grey Jungle Fowl, Indian Hill Myna, Robin, Jungle Babbler And Darter can be seen in Thattekad. Mammals like Leopard, Bear, Porcupine can be seen here. Several snakes like python and cobra are here.
